5 ways to make your home senior dog friendly.

When you have a senior dog in your home, it is important to make modifications to their environment to support their aging bodies. Small changes can make a big difference to give them a comfortable and enjoyable senior lifestyle.

Add Traction to Slippery Floors: Senior dogs often experience apprehension when walking on slippery or uneven flooring. We recommend using jute runners, yoga mats and other non-slip mats to provide them a 'pathway' they can walk on without the fear of slipping.

Orthopaedic Bedding: Senior dogs often suffer from osteoarthritis. This can mean achey, painful joints - especially at night time! We recommend thick, supportive orthopaedic bedding that your pet can easily get in and out of (no high edges). Your pet should have multiple beds around the house, so they always have a safe and comfortable space to rest.

Food and Water Close: Food, water and comfort toys should be easily accessible and within reach, so your senior dog does not have to struggle to get to them. This is particularly important if they are recovering from surgery or illness.

Utilise Ramps or Small Steps: If your pet does enjoy going on the couch or bed, we recommend to limit jumping and to put stairs or ramps in place so they don't have to jump to get to their favourite spots. This can also be helpful when getting in and out of vehicles.

Caring for a senior pet is an honour and privilege, however it is also a big responsibility. These small steps will hopefully assist in caring for your pet in their most vulnerable years.
