from beaks to scales: caring for your non-traditional pets in summer.

when we talk about summer safety, the conversation usually revolves around dogs and cats. but in the geraldton community, our coastal crew includes plenty of feathered, scaly, and hopping friends who feel the heat just as much.
Whether you have a bunny, a bird, or a reptile, their summer needs are unique:
Bunnies + Guinea Pigs: These little guys are incredibly sensitive to heatstroke. Ensure their hutches are moved to the coolest part of the house and consider "ice bottle" cooling—frozen water bottles wrapped in a sock for them to lean against.
Feathered Friends: Birds enjoy a misting spray on hot days, but keep a close eye on their cage placement. A spot that is shady in the morning might be in direct, punishing sun by 2 PM.
Scaly Companions: While reptiles love the warmth, they still need a "thermal gradient." If their entire enclosure gets too hot without a cool end to retreat to, they can dehydrate quickly.
Every creature deserves a stress-free summer. If you’re worried about your non-traditional pet, we’re always happy to pull up in the driveway and check in on them!
